4 Tips for Riders New to Kiteboarding

I’m an old guy who loves to ride.  I will never learn to handle pass or kill it on sliders.  I have however seen and worked with hundreds of new kiteboarders in the last 10 years.  I don’t give lessons, but I love to see the eyes of new kiteboarders on the day they first stay upwind. I have a 14 year old and 17 year old who are both up and riding and nothing gets me more stoked.  I can’t wait till they are boosting over my head. Here are four simple things that will radically increase your learning curve and keep you much safer.  All four kiteboarding tips are super easy to do with a bit of work and some planning.

A Sunset Session In Hatteras: 12m North Rebel Review

I decided to unpack the 12m North Rebel for last night’s sunset session in Hatteras NC.  Winds were in the 12-16 knot range and there was one foot chop to ride through.  Me being new rider at 175 pounds I was thinking I could be underpowered so I grabbed the Cabrinha Spectrum which has a moderate rocker and some extra volume.  With the chop I also liked the idea of having the secure feeling you get from the Cabrinha Sync footstraps.

From the first time I launched the kite I quickly realized that my initial thought was wrong.  After a few tacks I decided I needed a board with more outline and rocker to handle the power and chop.  I grabbed a Cabrinha Caliber with Sync footstraps and headed back out.  Now I was riding comfortably with speed through the chop.
